Independent benchmark compares QEC operations across ten processors

A Jülich preprint compares error-correction-related circuit primitives across IBM, IQM and Quantinuum processors. Helios shows lower effective hardware error in selected comparisons; the benchmark tests building blocks rather than complete fault-tolerant applications.

IN CONTEXTOctober 8 is the company's publication date; paper v1 is October 5. Effective hardware error is a benchmark-derived metric, not a universal vendor ranking or raw two-qubit gate error. No peer-review status claimed.

D-WaveSimulator releaseCONTEXT REVIEWED

D-Wave opens a beta for its gate-model simulator

Selected research and commercial users can test error-aware programming based on D-Wave's dual-rail gate-model architecture. The beta provides simulator access while the corresponding gate-model hardware remains forthcoming.

IN CONTEXTA simulator launch is not delivery of the planned QPU. Do not combine annealing qubit counts with gate-model or logical-qubit counts.

Rigetti studies quantum preconditioning for constrained optimization

A hybrid method uses QAOA-derived correlations to guide Gurobi while preserving a hard constraint. Computational benchmarks reached good solutions sooner on balanced graph-partitioning instances, motivating further tests across more varied constraints.

IN CONTEXTSeptember 29 is the blog date; preprint v1 is August 28. The reported solver improvement is benchmark-specific and is not proof of end-to-end practical quantum advantage, including all quantum overhead.

IonQ tests a real-time decoder on a standard CPU

IonQ tested classical decoding against simulated workloads reaching 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5 million operations. A standard CPU kept decoding overhead low in the tested noise model; this is not a 408-logical-qubit hardware demonstration.

IN CONTEXTDistinguish the real classical CPU implementation from simulated QPU workload. Company reports as little as 0.02% stretch under its tested conditions; do not generalize that minimum across all workloads.

Microsoft and Qolab propose criteria for scalable logical qubits

The authors propose evaluating logical qubits through reliability, scale, capability and runtime. Their framework requires repeated correction, fault-tolerant universal operations and timely feedback, helping distinguish small demonstrations from architectures intended for long computations.

IN CONTEXTThis proposes terminology and evaluation criteria; it does not announce newly demonstrated qubits or constitute an adopted industry standard.

IonQ models trapped-ion resources for breaking secp256k1

IonQ's architecture-specific estimate models secp256k1 key recovery with 19,397 physical qubits, 1,457 logical qubits and 25.7 days per attempt. It is a future-machine resource study; no wallet or live cryptographic system was broken.

IN CONTEXTThe studied curve is secp256k1, not Solana's Ed25519. Counts depend on the trapped-ion architecture, error model, coding, scheduling and target success probability. Do not turn the company's roadmap alignment into a predicted break date or directly rank it against Google's different model.

Helix demonstrates logical memory and computation on Helios

Quantinuum reports Helix memory error of 4.6×10⁻⁵ per logical qubit per round without post-selection. Separate Clifford-gate experiments also improved on physical-level performance, demonstrating complementary error-correction building blocks on Helios.

IN CONTEXTThe 4.6×10⁻⁵ number is a memory metric, not arbitrary logical-gate error. Memory experiment used 20 syndrome rounds. These demonstrations do not establish a utility-scale universal computer.

Pasqal traps atoms using light from a photonic chip

Pasqal reports four rubidium atoms held in optical traps supplied by one photonic chip, with lifetimes around 27.5 seconds. The experiment explores a compact alternative to bulky optics for future neutral-atom processors.

IN CONTEXTFour trapped atoms are not four error-corrected logical qubits. The proposed 50-fold footprint reduction and eventual 10,000-atom scale are future design goals.

QuEra sets out its gigaquop roadmap for 2028–2029

QuEra targets a future system with more than 1,000 logical qubits and roughly a billion reliable logical operations. The proposed machine follows Libra and is intended for initial use in 2028–2029; these specifications remain roadmap targets.

IN CONTEXTThe proposed >20,000 physical qubits and 10⁻⁹ logical error rate are unachieved targets in this announcement. Gigaquop here means a reliable-operation budget, not one billion operations per second.

NIST advances additional signature candidates for review

NIST advanced nine additional post-quantum signature candidates to another evaluation round. This expanded the research pipeline rather than approving nine new standards; candidate status can change as cryptanalysis continues.

IN CONTEXTHistorical selection included HAWK. NIST's current PQC page says HAWK was subsequently withdrawn following a vulnerability announcement on July 28, 2026; do not display all nine as currently active or approved. Finalized ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA are distinct from these candidates.

Solana outlines Falcon-based migration research

Anza and Firedancer independently developed initial Falcon signature implementations for Solana's post-quantum migration research. The Foundation describes preparation for a potential network transition; ordinary Solana wallet authorization has not thereby become post-quantum secure.

IN CONTEXTInitial implementations are not a completed mainnet-wide migration. Do not present the Foundation's qualitative timing language as an independently established Q-day forecast. Solana wallet addresses normally expose Ed25519 public keys; program-derived addresses have a different threat model.

NIST drafts smaller SLH-DSA signatures for limited-use keys

Draft SP 800-230 proposes six SLH-DSA parameter sets aimed at faster verification and smaller signatures. They impose a limit of 2²⁴ signatures per key, making the proposal relevant to carefully bounded signing workloads.

IN CONTEXTThis item describes an April draft, not final approval or unrestricted wallet suitability. The proposed variants are not for general-purpose use. The draft comment period ended June 12, 2026.

New resource estimates for elliptic-curve attacks

Theoretical circuits could solve 256-bit elliptic-curve discrete logarithms with fewer than 500,000 physical superconducting qubits under specified error and connectivity assumptions. This is not demonstrated hardware. April 15 revision patches proof-system software.

A LITTLE CONTEXT GOES A LONG WAY

Read the frontier with confidence.

Six distinctions that make quantum headlines easier to judge.

FIELD GUIDE / 01
01Physical vs. logical qubits+

Physical qubits are the hardware. A logical qubit encodes information across physical qubits so errors can be detected and corrected. The overhead depends on the code, hardware, and target reliability.

Read the primary source
02Correction is not detection+

Error detection can flag or discard bad runs. Error correction aims to keep computing despite errors. Reported logical-qubit counts can mean very different things depending on which method was used.

Read the primary source
03A benchmark is a specific task+

A speedup on one experiment does not establish an advantage on every useful problem. Check the task, comparison computer, accuracy, and whether the classical cost is measured or estimated.

Read the primary source
04An attack estimate is a model+

Modeled qubit counts rely on an architecture, error rate, runtime, and algorithm. Numbers from different proposals are not directly interchangeable. An estimate does not mean the machine has been built.

Read the primary source
05Post-quantum means new cryptography+

Post-quantum algorithms run on ordinary computers and aim to resist quantum attacks. Key establishment and digital signatures solve different problems; a wallet needs secure spending authorization.

Read the primary source
06A migration target is not Q-day+

An organization’s deadline for upgrading cryptography is a planning decision. It is not a forecast of the first practical attack. For Solana, network and wallet migration must be distinguished from prototypes.
